Filter change calendar for Charlotte
The interval printed on a filter sleeve assumes an average house in an average climate. Charlotte is neither. Two separate pollen seasons, a cooling season that keeps blowers running for months, and steady construction along the growth corridors all shorten the useful life of a 1-inch filter.
This is the schedule that fits a Piedmont house. Use it as the plan, and use the light test on the page below as the override — if you cannot see light through the pleats, change it regardless of what the month says.

Intervals below assume a 1-inch pleated filter. A 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet filter runs 6 to 12 months — use this as a guide to when to check it, not when to change it.

Low loadCheck it. Change if it went in before Thanksgiving.
Deep heating season. The house is closed up, the blower cycles on cold snaps, and the particle load is mostly indoor in origin — dust, dander, fibers, cooking. Low outdoor load, but a filter installed in the fall has been working through the heating season and is often further along than it looks.

Moderate loadPut a fresh filter in before the month is out.
The quiet turning point. Tree pollen in the Piedmont can begin well before it feels like spring, with cedar, juniper, alder, and maple among the first to release. Getting a clean filter in at the end of February means you enter March with the full service life ahead of you rather than half of it spent.

High loadShorten to a 30 to 45 day interval.
Tree pollen ramps hard. Maple, elm, birch, and then oak, which is the heavy hitter in this region. The fine grains that stay airborne longest are already in the air well before the visible pine dust arrives. Systems start cycling for cooling on warm afternoons, so blower hours go up at the same moment the load does.

High loadChange at 30 days. No exceptions with pets.
Peak. This is the month of the yellow-green film on the car hood and the pollen ring at the edge of a puddle. That visible layer is mostly pine and settles quickly; the oak and grass grains you cannot see are the ones your return is pulling in. A 1-inch filter installed in early April can be visibly loaded by early May.

High loadChange again at 30 to 45 days.
Tree pollen tapers and grass pollen picks up, so the load does not really drop — it changes species. Cooling season gets underway in earnest, which means the blower is running many more hours per day than it was in March. Both curves are working against the filter at once.

Grass pollen continues, tree pollen is mostly done, and humidity arrives. The air handler is now running most days. A damp return and a filter full of organic material is not a combination to leave in place an extra month because the calendar says you have time.

Maximum blower hours of the year. Outdoor pollen is at its lowest point between the spring and fall seasons, but hours are what load a filter, and July has the most of them. This is also the stretch when the county forecasts ozone days — worth knowing that ozone is a gas and no filter in your return removes it.

High loadFresh filter mid-month, then back to 30 to 45 days.
Ragweed starts, typically around the middle of the month, while cooling is still running flat out. This is the worst overlap of the year: the second pollen season arrives before the blower hours come down. A filter that went in at the start of summer is usually overdue right about now.

Ragweed peak, and the plant is wind-pollinated, so the grains are fine, numerous, and built to travel. It grows on disturbed ground — roadsides, easements, vacant lots, the edges of construction sites — which a fast-growing metro has in quantity. Cooling is still running on warm afternoons.

Ragweed continues until the first hard frost, which around here comes later than the pleasant weather suggests. Wet fallen leaves add mold spores to the outdoor mix. Systems swing between cooling and heating day to day.

Frost generally arrives and the pollen seasons close out. Heating takes over, the house closes up for the winter, and the load shifts back to indoor sources. Starting the heating season on a clean filter is the single easiest good habit on this calendar.

Closed house, heating cycling, and a seasonal bump in indoor particle sources — cooking, candles, a fireplace if you use one, and more people indoors. Outdoor load is at its annual low, so a 60 day interval is usually fine unless something in the house says otherwise.
Why does this calendar have two short-interval peaks instead of one?
Because Charlotte has two distinct pollen seasons — tree and grass pollen in spring, and ragweed from late summer into fall — and both of them overlap months when the blower is already running long hours.
Most national filter advice is built around a single spring pollen season and a system that runs hard for a few weeks a year. In the Piedmont, the spring load arrives while cooling is starting up, and the ragweed load arrives while cooling is still at full tilt. Two loads, both landing on a system that is moving a lot of air.
That is the entire reason the interval drops to 30 to 45 days in March through May and again in August through September, and relaxes to 45 to 60 days in the quiet stretches.
Does this calendar apply to a 4-inch or 5-inch media filter?
No — a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet filter generally runs 6 to 12 months, so use this calendar to pick the two moments a year you check it rather than as a change schedule.
A media cabinet holds far more pleated surface area than a 1-inch panel, which is why it can hold more material before airflow suffers. The practical rhythm is to inspect it at the end of spring pollen season and again after ragweed ends, and to change it when the light test says so.
If you are not sure which one you have, a 1-inch filter slides into a slot behind a wall or ceiling grille or a thin track at the furnace. A 4-inch or 5-inch filter pulls out of a hinged metal box bolted to the air handler.
What if you forget and leave a filter in for six months?
Change it now and look at your registers — a badly overdue 1-inch filter restricts airflow, which makes the system work harder and can let dust bypass around the frame, but it is not a situation that requires anything beyond replacing the filter.
Restricted airflow is the practical cost. It shows up as weak air at the supply registers, longer run times to hit the same setting, and in cooling, a coil that runs colder than it should. None of that is repaired by anything other than putting a clean filter in.
While the old one is out, check that the new filter actually fits its track with no gap down the sides, and that the airflow arrow on the frame points toward the furnace. Air takes the easy path, and a half-inch gap is an easier path than the media.
