1-inch panel filters
The residential core. These slide into a slot behind a wall or ceiling return grille, or into a thin track at the furnace. If your filter comes out from behind a large hallway vent, it is one of these.

4-inch and 5-inch media cabinet filters
These pull out of a hinged metal box bolted to the air handler, usually installed with the system rather than added later. More pleated surface area means a longer service interval and a smaller airflow penalty at higher MERV ratings.
- 16x25x4actual 15.5 x 24.5 x 3.75
A 4" media cabinet bolted to the furnace, not a wall vent. If yours pulls out of a hinged metal box, this is the family.
MERV 8 · 11 · 13
- 20x25x4actual 19.5 x 24.5 x 3.75
The most common 4" media cabinet size. Sits directly against the air handler in the return plenum.
MERV 8 · 11 · 13
- 20x25x5actual 19.5 x 24.5 x 4.375
A 5" cabinet, typically installed with the system rather than added later. Deeper pleat, longer service interval.
MERV 8 · 11 · 13
- 16x25x5actual 15.5 x 24.5 x 4.375
The narrower 5" cabinet. Less common than 20x25x5 — confirm the depth stamped on your current filter.
