MERV ratings explained

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a single number, from 1 to 16 in the residential and light commercial range, describing how well a filter captures particles of a given size. Higher is not automatically better, and the reason why is the interesting part.

The rating comes from ASHRAE Standard 52.2, which tests a filter against three particle size ranges: 0.3 to 1.0 microns, 1.0 to 3.0 microns, and 3.0 to 10.0 microns. As the rating goes up, the filter has to perform in progressively finer ranges. That is the whole idea, and the scale below shows it directly.

The three ratings that matter at home

Residential systems realistically run MERV 8, 11, or 13. Everything below 8 is a dust screen; everything above 13 belongs to equipment built for the resistance.

MERV 8

Equipment protection
Captures
The coarse fraction: lint, hair, most pollen grains, larger dust. Rated on the 3 to 10 micron range and up.
Best for
Systems where the only goal is keeping the blower wheel and coil clean, and older systems with restricted return ductwork where airflow is genuinely tight.
Tradeoff
Lowest resistance to airflow of the three, and the least capture at the fine end. Most of what stays suspended in your air passes through it.

MERV 11

The residential default
Captures
Everything MERV 8 catches, plus the 1 to 3 micron range — most pet dander, finer dust, and the smaller pollen fragments that stay airborne longest.
Best for
A 1-inch slot in a typical Charlotte house. Treat it as the floor rather than the upgrade if you have a dog or a cat.
Tradeoff
Slightly more resistance than MERV 8. In a pleated filter with adequate media area, ordinary residential systems handle it without complaint.

MERV 13

Fine particle capture
Captures
Reaches into the 0.3 to 1 micron range, which is where combustion particles and smoke live. The first residential-common rating that addresses PM2.5 meaningfully.
Best for
A 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet, where the media area is large enough that the airflow cost is modest. Also viable in a 1-inch slot on a system with adequate return capacity.
Tradeoff
The highest resistance of the three. In a 1-inch slot on a system with a single undersized return, this is the rating that can cause trouble. Measure static pressure before committing.

What is actually in the air, by size

Sizes are approximate and describe the range each type spans rather than a single value.

PM2.5 combustion particles 0.3–2.5 µm
Particles 2.5 microns and smaller, mostly from vehicle exhaust, wood and wildfire smoke, and cooking. Invisible, and they stay suspended for hours.
Pet dander 0.5–10 µm
Skin flakes shed by cats and dogs. Fine enough at the small end to pass straight through a coarse filter.
Mold spores 3–40 µm
Released by damp organic material, including the wet leaf litter that shows up here every autumn.
Household dust 1–100 µm
A mixture rather than one thing: fabric fibers, soil tracked indoors, drywall and construction dust, skin cells.
Pollen grains 10–100 µm
Tree, grass, and ragweed pollen. Large enough that a basic filter catches most of it, and large enough to see when it settles on a car.
Human hair (for reference) 50–70 µm
Included only as a size reference. A hair is roughly twenty times the diameter of the largest PM2.5 particle.

Which MERV rating should you actually buy?

MERV 11 for a 1-inch slot and MERV 13 for a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet, unless an HVAC tech has measured your system's static pressure and told you otherwise.

That recommendation is not a compromise between marketing tiers. It follows from the physical constraint: a 1-inch panel has limited media area, so pushing the rating up costs you airflow faster; a deep cabinet has enough area that the same rating costs far less.

If you have a pet, MERV 11 is where you start rather than where you upgrade to. Dander sits in the size range MERV 8 largely passes and MERV 11 largely catches, and it is produced continuously in a climate that never really forces the system off.

Is a higher MERV rating always better?

No — a higher rating captures finer particles but presents more resistance to airflow, and on a system with restricted return ductwork that tradeoff can cost you more than the capture gains you.

Reduced airflow is not a theoretical concern. It shows up as weak air at the registers, longer run times, a coil that can freeze in cooling, and a heat exchanger running hotter than designed. Those are equipment problems, and they are caused by restriction, whatever its source.

The nuance most warnings leave out is that the rating alone does not tell you the pressure drop. Pleating adds surface area, and surface area is what keeps resistance down as efficiency goes up. A well-made pleated MERV 11 can breathe more easily than a cheap, densely packed MERV 8. Compare filters, not just numbers.

The way to settle it for your house is to have a tech measure total external static pressure across the air handler with the filter you intend to run. It takes a few minutes during a normal service call and replaces every rule of thumb on this page with a number about your system.

What is the difference between MERV 13 and HEPA?

HEPA is a much finer standard than MERV 13, and a true HEPA filter cannot be dropped into a residential return slot because the resistance is far beyond what a standard air handler is built to pull air through.

HEPA belongs to portable room units and purpose-built equipment with their own fans sized for the resistance. Central residential systems are not designed for it, and installing something that restrictive in the return is how you damage a blower motor rather than clean your air.

MERV 13 is the practical ceiling for most central residential systems, and in a deep media cabinet it is a comfortable one. If you want finer filtration than that, the answer is a portable unit in the room where you want it, not a denser filter in the return.

Does any MERV rating remove odors, gases, or ozone?

No — MERV measures particle capture only, and odors, gases, volatile organic compounds, and ozone are not particles, so no MERV rating addresses them.

This matters in Charlotte specifically because ozone drives a share of the county's summer air quality alerts. On a forecast ozone day, the filter in your hallway return is not the relevant tool, and a product that implies otherwise is overselling.

Removing gases requires a different mechanism entirely, usually activated carbon, which is a separate media and a separate purchase. Some filters combine a carbon layer with pleated media; that layer addresses odor, and the MERV number still describes only the particle side.
